Putting in a new lawn is one of the fastest ways to transform a backyard - but picking the right turf for Southeast Queensland conditions matters just as much as laying it well. Here’s how the most popular options stack up for Logan yards.
Buffalo (e.g. Sir Walter)
Soft-leaf buffalo is the go-to for most SE QLD family backyards, and for good reason: it handles shade better than almost anything else, copes with kids and pets, and stays green through our hot summers. It needs a little more mowing in peak growth, but it’s hard to beat for all-round durability.
Couch
Couch loves full sun and bounces back quickly from wear, which makes it a favourite for open, sunny yards and high-traffic areas. The trade-offs: it goes thin and brown in shade, and it’ll creep into garden beds if you don’t edge it. Give it sun and a regular edge and it looks superb.
Zoysia
Zoysia is the low-maintenance pick - slow-growing (less mowing), dense enough to choke out weeds, and tidy underfoot. It’s a little slower to establish and to recover from heavy wear, but for a neat, fuss-free lawn it’s a great choice.
Which should you choose?
As a rule of thumb: shade or kids and pets → buffalo; full sun and wear → couch; low-maintenance and tidy → zoysia. Ground prep makes or breaks any of them, so it’s worth getting it laid properly.
